The History of the Building

 

This was built on part of the land that belonged to the Butcher Mansion (207 N. 35th St.)

 

Previous Residents

 

1910, August, Ad in Philadelphia Inquirer:

            “HAMPTON COURT

            “203-211 N. 35th St.

            “Housekeeping apartments, 4 to 8 rooms and bath; large lower porches, sun parlor; bell boy service; Market St. Elevated, Lancaster ave., and Baring st. cars.  Apply at building or Milligan & Webber, 520 Walnut st.

 

1915, Nov. 16: Marriage of Dorothy Marshall Brinton, daughter of Mary E. Brinton, to Charles McVea Buckner of Huntington, W. Va.  They were married at the Church of the Savior (Protestant Episcopal), 38th and Chestnut Streets

 

1917 Directory: William C. Hicks salesman h 207 N 35th

 

1920: among the 47 residents were:

Leonardo J. List           33        Manufacturer of machinery

Marie E. List               35        Father born in R.I., mother in Ohio

Elmira Jenkins             23        Servant; black; born in N.J.

            Leonardo grew up at 3406 Hamilton St.  In 1910, they lived at 3301 Hamilton St. and in 1930, they lived at 3605 Hamilton St.  The 1950 Directory lists: L. J. List, 277 Forest Rd., Merion.

 

1946: Mary C. Brantingham

            Birth: 20 July 1869      Death: 13 April 1961  (Age 91)
