The History of the Building

 

3300-02: “Circa 1865, two-and-one-half, story Victorian double; stone facade, large gables with arcuated attic window at roofline of 3300 and smaller gable at roofline of 3302. Each has elaborately-milled porch latticework, turned posts and balustrades; porches wrap around to front (3300) and from the front to the side (3302)”

Previous Residents of 3302 Baring Street

 

The 1872 map shows 3300 and 3302 owned by Mary Bancroft.  In 1870, she lived at 3300.

 

1877: Death of Catherine Campbell, 81 years old,, widow of Captain Malcolm Campbell, mother-in-law of Charles L. Pascal.  The Pascal family previous lived at 315 N. 35th St.  By September, 1878, when Charles Pascal died, they were living at 3705 Walnut St., a “first-class” boarding house.

            The 1866 Directory listed Enoch S. Farson, refrigerator manufacturer, 220 Dock St.   His company, E. S. Farson & Co. (Enoch S. Farson & Henry A. Brown), was next door at 222 Dock St.  The 1861 Directory lists the company as selling “house furnishing goods.”  In 1861, Farson probably lived at 308 Wharton St.

            In 1887, Enoch Farson and his son Enoch Jr. were both listed at 3606 Powelton Ave.

            “Mr. [Robert Evans] Hannum [Jr.] married at Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania, June 27, 1866, Mary E. Farson, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1845, daughter of Enoch S. Farson, a sea captain, later in the refrigerating business in Philadelphia, and his wife, Lavinia (Hackett) Farson, both deceased.”

            Joseph Wilson Cochran, Jr.:

            “Clergyman. Ordained Presbyterian ministry. 1894; pastor of Christ Church, Madison, Wis.. 1893-98; Northminster Church, Philadelphia. 1898-1907; corresponding secretary of the Presbyterian Church in United Slates Army Board of Ministerial Education and University Work since May, 1907.  Born Jan. 8 , 1867, at Peoria Ill.; son of Joseph Wilson and Martha Hamilton (Cox) Cochran. Grad., 18S9, from Macalester College, Minn., with degree of A.B. (honorary philosophical oration); grad., 1899, from McCormick Theological Seminary (honorary degree of D.D.. in 1901, from Macalester College). Author of (monograph): "State Universities and the Religious Denominations"; "The Church and the Workingman." Trustee of the General Assembly Presbyterian Church In United States Army. Member of the City Club. Married Helen V. Scudder, of New York. May 22, 1894. Home address: Swarthmore, Pa. Office: 611 Witherspoon Bildg., Philadelphia, Pa., U.S.A.

            “Rev. Joseph Wilson Cochran is a native of Peoria, a son of Hon. J. W. Cochran formerly Judge of the Circuit Court, was brought up in connection with this Church, received his early education in the Peoria Schools, his collegiate at Macalester College, Minn., his theological training at McCormick Theological Seminary, was for several years pastor of a leading Church in Madison, Wisconsin, and is now pastor of the Northminster Church, Philadelphia, Pa.”

            Helen Vanderveer Scuddy Cochran was born in Madras, India.  Her father and grandfather were Presbyterian medical missionaries in India and Ceylon.  She died April 11, 1914 at the age of 45.  They were living in Swarthmore.

            He was the Grand Marshal for the Mason’s Washington Sesquicentennial anniversary, 1902

            Hellen Loller Wells was the daughter of Joshua and Sarah (Dole) Loller.  She was born and raised in Philadelphia.
