The History of the Building

 

The northern edge of this property was part of the northern boundary of the Bingham-Baring estate.

 

three-and-one-half story brick house; gabled front with stick style detail; Circa 1905 Colonial Revival porch, later partially enclosed. The middle bay between buildings [3303 and 3405] is also approximately circa 1880. It is a two-and-one-half story brick projecting bay with slate shingled mansard.”

            The deed for the twin, 3405, was transferred at the same time.  James was deceased.

            Rebecca is the widow of James Kirkpatrick, a liquor dealer.  In the 1858 Directory, they are listed at “Bridge above 34th” and in 1861 at “Bridge & 34th.”

            J. Roberts Foulke began working for the Provident Life and Trust Co. in 1873.  In 1881, he was named Trust Officer of Provident.

 

1882, March: Deed transferred from Rebecca Richardson to J. Roberts & Emma B. Foulke.

 

1890 Directory: J. Roberts Foulke, trust officer at 409 Chestnut, h 3403 Hamilton

 

1897 Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science: J. Roberts Foulke, member

            The 1898 Blue Book lists him living at The Aldine.  In 1900, they lived at 1910 Chestnut St.  They started spending their summers in Radnor and moved there before 1910.  In 1910, J. Roberts was widowed and living with his daughter, a cook, a waitress, a nurse, a gardener, and a coachman.  He remarried in 1916.

1909, Aug. 8: Death of Lucretia Robertson Seymour, “widow of Dr. James E. Seymour, surgeon of First Nebraska Vol. Regiment.”  She died in Chester Heights, Pa.  Funeral services were held at the home of her son-in-law, William W. Fiske, 3403 Hamilton St. (Phila. Inquirer, Aug. 11, 1909)
