The History of the Building

 

3612-14: “Circa 1870, two-and-one-half story Second Empire style brick double with side and front Victorian porches. Second floor projecting bays. Slate shingled mansard with two dormers.”

            The 1867 directory lists him living at 609 N. 17th St.  He had an insurance office at 409 Walnut St.  He was a partner of Joseph Tillinghast.  The partnership was dissolved in 1868 (Phila. Inquirer, Jan. 2, 1868)

            The 1880 census and the 1889 Directory list them at 3602 Hamilton St.  In 1900, William was living at 3417 Hamilton St. with his second wife, Annie.  In 1906 and 1910, they were living at 3419 Hamilton St.  John had joined his father in the insurance company by 1889 (about age 21) and in 1889-’90 moved to 4330 Wallace.

            “ALLEN, William Williams: Insurance agent: born in Philadelphia. He served through the Civil War with a distinguished record, and afterward engaged in the fire insurance business in Philadelphia…. Col. Allen formerly commanded the Volunteer Corps of the National Guard of Pennsylvania, and he is prominent in Grand Army circles. He is also a high Mason and Knight Templar, and one of the leaders in Masonic affairs in Philadelphia.” (Who's Who in Pennsylvania, 1908)

            In 1873, he participated in the laying of the cornerstone for the First Presbyterian Church of Mantua which was renamed the Northminster Presbyterian.
