The History of the Building

 

The Registry of Deeds and Mortgages, City and County of Philadelphia gives a date of 1867-’68 for this building.

 

3620-22: “two-and-one-half story, gabled front brick Italianate double. Circa 1895 Colonial Revival porch and shutters”

            The second census enumeration in November, 1870, lists M. Lina age 60-64, a male.  It is possible that this is Mathew F. Lind, a merchant, who is listed in the 1861 directory at “Hamilton below 36th.”  He had a shop at 426 Market St.  He may have been deceased by 1870.
            The two Roberts boys were probably orphans who were boarders here.  In 1880, they were boarders at 3350 Walnut St.

1880:

Miriam Moore              46        Married; born in Del.

Fanny D. Moore          25        School teacher; born in Del.

James C. Moore           22        Bookkeeper; born in Del.

            The 1881 directory lists James C. Moore, a clerk, living at 338 N. 32nd St. [410 N. 32nd St.].  In 1900, he was living with his wife and two daughters in Lansdowne, Del.

 

1890 Directory: Edward W. Smithson

            In 1895 and 1900, he lived with his son at 3510 Hamilton St.  In 1900, he was 82 years old.

 

1900:

Mary T. Robison          21        Married less than a year, no children

Jamie Nugent               18        Servant; born in Ireland, immigrated 3 years earlier

            The 1895 directory lists him as a student living at 609 N. 43rd st.

 

1910:

Martha B Altemus       54        Widowed, one child; renting

Ellen S Altemus          19

            In 1920, they lived at 3509 Baring St.  In 1900, they were living at 1702 Spring Garden St. with Edward and Eleanora Levy.  Martha is listed as his sister-in-law and Eleanor is listed as his granddaughter.  Martha is listed as widowed, married 15 years [before she was widowed) with one child.  In 1880, Martha was living with her father, Benjamin Altemus, and siblings on Maple Ave.

 

1920:

Harry C Banks             72        Owner with a mortgage

Delia S Banks              58        Father born in Germany

            Delia was Harry’s second wife.  His son lived next door at 3620 Hamilton St.  In 1900, they all lived at 6327 Drexel Rd., Ward 34.  At that time, Harry C., Sr. was a clerk for a steel company.  In 1910, they were all living in Lower Merion. 

 

1930:

August B. Ring            [?]        57        Public school teacher; divorced; born in N.J., parents born in N.Y.; owner, house valued at $6,000
