The History of the Building

 

The south side of this block was developed by John Shedwick (see 3408 Race St.).  The first residents appear toward the west end of the block in the 1862 directory (compiled in the fall of 1861) with the street listed as Hampton Place.

            The 1861 directory lists James N. Beck, music publisher, 632 Chestnut, home at 1915 Vine St.  The 1862 Directory lists James M. [sic.] Beck, musician, 746 Florida.

 

1865 Directory: Emmor Kimber

            The 1861 Directory lists Emmor Kimber, Jr. and Edward B. Kimber (a clerk) living on Lancaster near 37th St.

            In 1866, Edward lived at 823 N. 5th St.

            The 1866 directory lists him at 3718 Baring St.

            In 1880, they lived in Coatesville, Chester Co., Pa. where he was a clerk in a notions store.

            The 1890 census veterans schedule shows him living at 725 Union St.  He was a Private in Co. C, 196 Pa Volunteers, Aug. 1864-Nov. 1864.

            In 1900, they lived at 435 S. 43rd St.  Sophia was married with two children, although her husband was not listed with them.  Bertha and a younger daughter, Blanch, were single.

            In 1900, the Leamons lived at 3625 Hamilton.  They sold that house in February, 1915.
