The History of the Building
3700 and 3702 were built at the same time,
c1870, and in a transitional Italianate style very similar to 3701-03
Baring St. behind them. They lacked
a few of the more elaborate features on 3701-03 such as the brick window
surrounds and the stone belt-course above the second floor. 3700 was later modified with Colonial Revival
entries on the front and side, possibly in the early twentieth century. 3702 was demolished.

The 1867 directory (compiled in the

broken. He was taken to the Presbyterian

1897,
Philadelphia Inquirer: “Rev. Dr. Howlett’s Illness.
Rev. Dr. Thomas R. Howlett, who is seriously
ill at his home, 3700 Hamilton street, resigned as
pastor of the Berean Baptist Church when a number of
the Powelton Avenue Baptist Church joined them and called Rev. Frederick B.
Gruel as pastor of the New Tabernacle Baptists Church. Dr. Howlett has for
some time been far from well. He once
lost a leg in a railroad accident. He,
however, rallied and for some months assisted Rev. Dr. Hoyt at Epiphamy Baptist Church, where he is a member.” (Dec. 30,
