St.). The first residents appear toward
the west end of the block in the 1862 directory (compiled in the fall of 1861)
with the street listed as Hampton Place.

In 1860, he was living in Fallowfield, Chester Co. He was a 29 year-old farmer living with his
wife, their four children, his mother, a servant and a farm hand. He claimed $9,000 in personal property, but
no real estate.

Charles first wife, Alice Cheyney,
died in 1869 at age 29. Their daughter,
Mary Louise, died a few days later at 2 months of age. In 1882, he married Ella
L. Walraven in Wilmington, New Castle, Del.
1887 Directory: James M. Gilbough of Schlaich & Gilbaugh,
produce merchants at 34 N. Delaware Ave. and 35 N. Water St.

Gilbough moved to Philadelphia about 1862.
The 1863 directory lists him as a “huckster” and in 1864, he was selling
produce. In 1874, he became the first
president of the Philadelphia Produce Exchange.
In 1880, they were living at 717 S. 23rd St. He was listed in the census as a merchant.
