
The south side of this block was developed by John Shedwick (see 3408 Race
St.). The first residents appear
toward the west end of the block in the 1862 directory (compiled in the fall of
1861) with the street listed as Hampton Place.

Directory: John Gallagher, Captain, U.S. Navy, living at 3710 Hampton Place.
The
1860 census shows John Gallagher as a 56 year old sea captain. He lived with his wife and five children
somewhere between South St. and Fitzwater St. near the Delaware River. One son, William B. Gallagher, was also a sea
captain. Another, Joseph H. Gallaher,
was a physician. A third, John Gallaher,
Jr., became a weigher at the Customs House. The 1867 directory lists John Jr. at 1714 Pine St. and working for the U.S.
Navy.
